Green Schools
The Green Schools is an initiative set up by An Taisce to encourage students in schools all around Ireland to take responsibility for the environment around us. Scoil Phádraig’s committee is made up of students from 3rd to 6th class. Each class elects one committee member to represent their class. This makes us part of a fantastic club of environmentally friendly schools all over the world.
As a committee, we meet regularly to discuss any environmentally issues in our school and ways in which we can reduce, reuse and recycle. After every meeting we report back to our class outlining any new ideas that we have for our school. Everyone is very enthusiastic and works together to put actions in place to raise awareness on how looking after the environment aids people all over the world.
The pupils and staff of Scoil Phádraig are working on obtaining our Global Citizenship Litter and Waste flag. The aim of the flag is to support young people to recognise their position in the world, think critically, engage their values, and realise their potential to take informed solidarity action. We are working towards some short-, medium- and long-term goals.
What we have achieved to date:
- Both a recycling and general waste bin in every classroom.
- A compost bin in the staff room.
- Organised a ‘Spring Clean’ for our community, Clane and collected 2 bags of rubbish.
- Raised awareness about ‘Earth Day’ through drawing competitions.
- The Committee decided that all children should bring home all of their own lunch wrappers, sandwich crusts, tin foil, cling film, fruit peels etc. This has helped to reduce waste in the school and also allows parents to monitor what their child has or has not eaten in school each day.
- Created a ‘Scoot to School’ obstacle course to reduce our carbon footprint.
- Collected batteries for recycling in association with WEEE Ireland.
On Friday 3rd May, we enjoyed lots of exercise and fresh air for our ‘Scoot to School’ day. Our Green Schools Committee created a scooter obstacle course for the other students to enjoy. Our goal was to improve air quality by leaving the car at home and encourage healthy walking / scooting habits.
