School History

Our school’s proud history,  stretches back more than 185 years.

The story began in 1839 when St. Senchal’s School opened on the Dublin Road. For 143 years, it served the children of Clane and remains fondly remembered.

Over time, Clane grew, and so did St Sencell’s. Prefabs were added to the school, but it became too small for the growing population. The community of Clane, alongside the Board of Management, principal, Pat Lynch and the school community worked very hard for many years to make a new school possible. Fr Bob Thompson is also remembered for his tireless work to make this dream a reality.

In 1982, a new school opened here on the Prosperous Road and became known as Scoil Phádraig, adapting to the needs of a growing town and changing times.

Led by principal, Mr. Pat Lynch, 360 boys and their teachers— along with the same number of girls from the old girls’ school on Main Street —walked together through the village to their brand-new buildings on the Prosperous Road. Parents lined the streets to say goodbye and wish them well.

 The school had 12 classrooms and two halls, and staff even succeeded in raising the hall’s ceiling to allow for indoor games. The grounds, known locally as The Bottoms, were marshy and unusable at first, but through the efforts of teachers, pupils, and parents, they were drained and transformed into playing fields. Generations recall picking stones from the land, hard work that built the foundation of the school’s strong sporting tradition.

In the decades that followed, Scoil Phádraig continued to thrive. Under Principal, Mr Pat Costello, who took over in 2000, the school maintained its ethos of academic excellence, sport, music, and community spirit. Yet by the early 2000s, the growing population once again, demanded a bigger school.

Realising the vision for our  state-of-the-art 24-classroom school has been a long and determined journey, and anything but straightforward.

It began as far back as 2002 with the first letter written to the department requesting extra accommodation. We expanded with a semi-permanent extension in 2004, that extension became affectionately known as “The Bottoms” as it most likely was built on the fields that had been drained all those years earlier!   First placed on the Department of Education’s list in 2005, the project suffered repeated delays, shelved during the financial downturn in 2008, reinstated, altered, and postponed again.

Mr Costello retired in 2016 and Mr Carr was appointed principal.

In 2022 construction finally began.

The old school building was carefully demolished, and construction commenced on this site.

For more than two years, we operated from temporary accommodation while the new building was being built. Despite the challenges, our high standards were unwavering, thanks to the dedication of our exceptional staff and the strength of our community.

In August 2024, the new school finally opened its doors, led by principal, Mr Cathal Carr, alongside a dedicated staff bringing two decades of determination to fruition.

The official opening in June 2025 was not just the celebration of a building, but of the determination, faith, and resilience of an entire community.
